The end of the month, and new month goals

Ages ago I used to set goals every month. I don't tend to stick with a piece for too long, but they're not bad for guidance to keep me sorta on track. So I'll post them in a minute...but first - haikus!

Ok, what do haikus have to do with anything? Well, not much. But a bunch of us on one of my Orthodox forums started writing haiku (is that the plural?) about the forum named Desert Calling, or about anything really.

Here are a few of mine:

a home for oddballs
who live, love, laugh, sharing life
the aim: theosis

this is addictive
writing these important things
in a few short lines

trying to do math
to make silliness seem like
most profound wisdom

my priest says desert
is where a monk is praying
so in my church then?

monks are nice people
but they challenge us young ones
to do harder things

desert on the net
a place to come relax and
to find my soul food

my kitten Koukla
is an Orthodox kitten
she likes lentil soup

the aim - theosis
but the journey is harder
than i ever thought.

dormition fast now
eat a lot of chilli beans
and ignore the steak

(for us, the fast for the Dormition of the Theotokos begins today, August 1, and goes until the 15th, the feast of the Dormition)

One poster, Reader John, made me laugh:

I thought to myself
I forgot my umbrella
I'm Friedrich Nietzsche

God is dead, said I
Then, Nietzsche is dead, said God
I guess I was wrong

The desert is a
Really, really big sandbox
With cacti and snakes

The days are quite hot
The nights are so cold and dark
At least it's quiet

--

That was wonderfully off topic. Tonight's study was beautiful - on Mark 9, how good is that for Father matching the text with the feasts (next Wednesday is the feast of the Transfiguration, and that's the topic of the first section of Mark 9) without meaning to - he comments that we are probably doing the slowest study of a Gospel ever since we started it in February, though we've had a few weeks off for other topics (Lent will do that, as will the Great Feasts). We did Compline after and I was felt...peaceful. Light. Joyful, I suppose. As I joined the line to kiss Father's hand and say goodnight Dmitri said to me that he always wanted to see the smile on my face that I had then. And then we went home...and Troy and I really shouldn't be put in the same car without Jeremy to keep an eye on us. Even then I hate it, but without Jeremy we end up like cat and dog and it's not good. I didn't kill him, or tip something over him. I am somewhat proud of this. *sighs* I'm feeling...uncomfortable because of that I suppose. Life is still good and without struggle we wouldn't grow but some things are avoidable. This is. It won't happen again soon if I can help it.

I'm home now, with a bright candle lit in front of the icons and I'm going to take some solace in the Psalms, God-willing. They help, a lot - the prayers are universal, yet they fit my life. Doxa to Theo.

So, goals?

Apparently I totally forgot to make them last month. So, as usual, I'll start the month with the new ones, under headings.

Goals and stuff

I don't want to look at these, this month has been weird and I've been in a slump for a couple weeks. Yuck. But lets see...I'm in a down mood and maybe doing something will help.

LAST MONTH:
Stitching:
  • finish part 3 of JOB Nope, actually haven't touched it
  • make a good start on part 4 see above
  • work some more on peaceful paradise This, I achieved.
  • finish Jeremy's gift, start another one for whoever's next in line nope. sigh.
Church:
  • enjoy the paschal season very much so :)
  • attend church whenever i can *nods*
  • start reading the old testament again, cover to cover this time I've read some, I'm not being very disciplined with such things. Not good.
  • buy at least an icon of St Kyriaki, and as many others as I want/can afford that are on my list Still haven't done this, I'm not sure why.
  • try and actually keep my Rule most of the time Heh...um...
  • drag myself out of bed for morning prayers at least some of the time Some of the time. I usually spend the first few hours of the day adjusting to not being well because my body seems to forget overnight.
Other:
  • Make biscuits that aren't ANZACs Nope. Again, not sure why not.
  • Make biscuits that ARE ANZACs see above
  • Make dinner at least four times in the month I don't remember, but I know I made it at least twice and I think more than that.
  • Nag Mum to get the magazines photocopied so i can put recipes in binders well, we have a few photocopied, but no binder. it'll happen.
  • Finish boxing up the bookshelf, box up that side of my room/corner between that and the desk I've made a lot of progress. The boxes are neatly stacked here in the study now.
  • Put desk drawers contents into boxes after rationalising them no, not that disciplined (as with everything)
  • Sleep more often! As with all, yes and no. Sometimes I sleep a normal amount, mostly I don't. I don't know why.
THIS MONTH:
Stitching:
  • Stitch something on any of my projects
  • Stitch a bit on Peaceful Paradise
  • Get Nikos' icon back out again and work on it
Dressmaking:
  • Finish apron (just needs bias binding, pretty much)
  • Finish Bindi's medieval dress
  • Work with Nana on my black skirt if she comes
School:
  • catchup notes for current history topic, others if possible
  • go on excursion (yay!)
  • catchup maths homework and stay caught up
  • do the S.o.S. assignment I've been avoiding
  • try to get into the discipline of 1hr work/subject/day from M-Th each week
  • do the History assignment that's hanging over my head
Everything else:
  • continue cooking
  • binder-ise recipies
  • make some sweet things BEFORE the Apostles' fast!
  • cook dinner a few times
  • try to keep an easy Rule, at least

Goals for May

Yep, 'bout that time. Speaking of the time, please noone look at the timestamp. I'm avoiding sleep for some reason.

First, here's last month's recap:

Stitchy/Craft:
  • Finish page 4's sky, and page 8 of Peaceful Paradise. Nope. I got sidetracked when I left the chart in Abouna's office and haven't got back into it since
  • Make a good start on pgs 7 and 12 See above, though I did start part 12
  • Get at least 4 10x10 blocks done on A Restful Night Heh. No.
  • Organise my stash, use the drawers I dug up from our hallway I actually did organise some, and the drawers are now in use. But falling apart. Maybe I'll get some new ones soon?
  • 'kill' at least one clothing WIP Wishful thinking. Nope.
Church stuff:
  • survive Holy Week ;) Oh yes, wonderfully so.
  • get baptised! YES!
  • buy a new prayer rope and use it Yes, and got given one, so there's a black one with a gold bead in my bible case and a black one with a purple bead on my wrist
  • remember to take scarves with me Yes, most of the time.
  • keep going to a zillion and one services Oh yes. This week has been 'downtime' a bit, partly because we haven't asked and partly because I don't think anyone would have let me go to anything beyond the normal services. Smart.
  • eat healthily Trying. Failing. Trying more.
School:
  • hand in all my assignments Getting there
  • go to every class Yes
  • actually do my math homework Catching up!
  • learn to stop avoiding assignments Or not.
Other:
  • clean my room! Working on it. Slowly I'm putting things away in boxes to move out of my room when we take the furniture out and rip out the carpet, and that's helping.

So, this month.

Stitching:
  • finish part 3 of JOB
  • make a good start on part 4
  • work some more on peaceful paradise
  • finish Jeremy's gift, start another one for whoever's next in line
Church:
  • enjoy the paschal season
  • attend church whenever i can
  • start reading the old testament again, cover to cover this time
  • buy at least an icon of St Kyriaki, and as many others as I want/can afford that are on my list
  • try and actually keep my Rule most of the time
  • drag myself out of bed for morning prayers at least some of the time
Other:
  • Make biscuits that aren't ANZACs
  • Make biscuits that ARE ANZACs
  • Make dinner at least four times in the month
  • Nag Mum to get the magazines photocopied so i can put recipes in binders
  • Finish boxing up the bookshelf, box up that side of my room/corner between that and the desk

That'll do, I think.

Dalek plushies

Well, it's not hot today. It's been about 20*C, so quite nice. Mild enough inside to wear my purple dress, but I needed a jumper (sweater to you Americans) outside, when I dared to venture out - it's been stormy and raining.

I got my Sew&So order - ABOUT TIME! Some idiot must have put the clearly marked "air mail" package in the sea mail, that's the only explanation I can give. This is the fibres and buttons for Waxing Moon's Nuts About Autumn, to those who have forgotten/never heard in the first place. Beautiful, I haven't seen hand dyed cottons in real life before and these are lovely. And the buttons! Oh...to use a Bindi-ism, SQUEE. They are tiny little acorns and absolutely adorable. Expensive when you think about how much I paid for them vs how big they are but they are so cute that I think they were worth it. Now to rummage through my fabric stash to see if I have a piece of 28ct that suits it, or else I'll have to go to Spotlight (horrible fate) and pick some up. It's just plain fabric, and my LNS has a terrible range of fabric, so Spotlight it is.

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to get a piece of fabric for my Angel Virtues for a while. I should order it.

I need to contact Jean at Needle Little Love about the fabric for Peaceful Paradise too.

I am forbidden to start anything new. I am, I am. But Nuts About Autumn is screaming at me and it's little...*sigh*

I have finished knitting my dalek, too. Everything but the base, which will be knit when it's stuffed. The appendages are adorable - the plunger is the cutest. I need to dig up a needle big enough for the wool tomorrow, and then I'll sew them on and stuff him. I will have a very happy Bindi then! It shouldn't take me too long to knit the base.

For all my good intentions with my list, I found it too unwieldy. So I might go for daily goals instead.

Tomorrow I aim to:
  • Fill in the gaps on Dance of the Graces with the thread I was missing up until today
  • Reach the 1300 stitch mark on it too
  • Sew together dalek
  • Sort out Peaceful Paradise fabric
  • Figure out how big my fabric for the Angels needs to be
  • Not start anything new!!
  • Spend at least half an hour on my room. It is really really scaring me
  • Check that I don't have fabric for Nuts About Autumn in my stash
  • Coerce parents into taking me fabric shopping
  • Set up sewing machine and start Mali's dress
  • Read and note at least a few pages of TOW
  • Eat lunch - this is serious, I've been really bad on this one recently
  • Find out total allowance from parents to spend on dolls (parents pay for sister's horse so they give me equal amount to spend on whatever, fair's fair - it usually goes on stitching or dolls)
  • Decide on doll order
  • Order dolls
Hmm...that should keep me busy!

Lists

I've got to the point where I have a lot of time, and energy to do things with that time, so I waste it. Not useful. So I thought I'd start doing what I did at work - making a list, and then rolling over the undone things to the next day along with anything new that comes up.

Today has been slow. I spent some time cleaning, and a lot of time sorting my spare DMC into little baggies - it's all done now, yay! Now just to get some more stitchbow sleeves and binders for my master set and I'll be set... I also found a binder with the plastic sleeve kind of cover, so I might have to get a printout of Dance of the Graces (the artwork) and slip it in the front to use that when I get my floss for it.

It's Dad's birthday today, so we're having dinner, and mum spent the day cleaning. It's a bit weird being able to see our floor! All the random chaos from my dressmaking is sorted now too, or for the most part anyway, and the spare pieces of fabric have been cut into useful pieces with all the rest thrown away, and then they were folded and stacked.

Felicity is now dressed for spring in the rose gown too, and perched on top of our piano. Her bed is currently in our living room against the wall near the piano, and people have been commenting on her (I'd just put her to bed and left her be) so I thought well, I'd make her bed and dress her up to put her on display. Amanda (modern doll) is on a stand on my sewing cabinet in her purple dress.

So, lists. Tomorrow I am hopefully going to Spotlight to buy fabric for sister-creature's medieval gown, and wool/cotton for daleks, and I plan to pick up a pattern for some 18" doll clothes to make both for Amanda and my old faithful teddbear from when I was a kid's dress is disintegrating so she can have a new one too. I have lots of spare fabric from the green dresses, and it's a lovely small design so it will suit Amanda beautifully.

So the current to do list is as follows:
  • Continue going through magazines to find the recipes I've made and liked and copy them into my recipe notebooks, and copy out every lenten-friendly one that looks nice that I can find into that notebook for Mum's sake every Wednesday and Friday so that she doesn't have to keep feeding us vegetarian fried rice for lack of things to cook.
  • Finish this row of A Restful Night
  • Get wool/cotton for daleks
  • Get parents to fix/buy a new printer
  • Put the zip in and hem Bindi's green dress
  • Regather and reattach skirt for my green dress, and hem it
  • Clean my room
  • Sort out school stuff with Hamilton
  • Put each of my stitching projects into a large baggie so that I have everything at hand when I need it
  • Make up a folder for Dance of the Graces
  • Get Mum to print me out a colour copy of the front page, and black and white copies of the rest of the chart
  • Buy more stitchbow sleeves and binders to put them in
  • Stitchbowify remaining DMC for master set
  • Sort out fibres for Peaceful Paradise
  • Hassle Sew&So until I find out what happened to my order
  • Pull the DMC needed for Stretch that aren't currently in with him from spares
  • Go through TGOSMs that I haven't listed in my 'to stitch' list
  • Decide on a to stitch list from the JCS Ornie issue
  • Stitch an hour a day on whatever my rotation piece is at least
How's that? Nice list to work from...

Goals for October

Well... lets just say I didn't achieve what I wanted to, stitchy-wise. I did quite well with my life ones though, especially the ones pertaining to Orthodoxy. I'm being a lot more conservative with them this month!

Last month:
Stitchy goals:
  • Make progress on FFW during the Challenge SAL this month Didn't happen. At all.
  • Participate with same in the background SAL - ugh, a whole weekend of stitching glitter! Good for me though. Didn't happen either, I'm not in the world's best mood with that piece. Maybe I'd be better off buying the print.
  • Finish pages 1 and 2 of A Restful Night Sadly, no. Life got in the way.
  • Finish part 2 of JOB, make progress on part 3, try to finish and start part 4! This didn't happen either
  • Participate in JOB SAL each week to achieve the above. ...no.
  • Make progress on White Musings Yes, actually. Not a whole lot, but a bit.
  • Start *gulp* the new mystery sampler This one I achieved!
  • Make progress on MX, aim to get the main part of the house done Nope
  • Finish the motifs on page 6 of Tranquility Bloody frogs...
  • Buy stitchbows and stitchbow-ify another binder's worth of my master set Nope
  • Overhaul my 'what threads I have' list for the above Nope
  • Start a list for the fibres that I have, unused (non DMC) or are left over from kits ...nope.
Life Goals:
  • Attend DL twice, more if possible Every single week, yay!
  • Stick to the fasts I've been sick. If I fast when sick, I get in serious trouble with my Spiritual Father. Hence, no.
  • Read a book on Orthodoxy Yuppers, The Orthodox Way by Bishop (now Metropolitan) Kallistos Ware
  • Meet with Father Yep
  • Get rid of boxes, or sort them and put them under my bed Uh...no not really.
  • Get desk out of room It's still there
  • Argue some more with Centrelink No arguing whatsoever. I just haven't been bothered.
  • Work towards getting my licence again Yes :) I got the book again, and now I just need to do some more reading and retake the test.
This month:
Stitchy goals:
  • Finish part 1 of Historic Countries Sampler
  • Finish part 2 of above
  • Finish pages 1&2 of A Restful Night (carryover from last month)
  • Make progress on one other WIP
Life goals:
  • Attend DL at least twice on Sundays
  • Make the spidery gift
  • Get all my clothes AWAY and pack the heavy winter ones in boxes for the summer
  • Finish godsister's dress on time
  • Make a bag for church
  • Buy damask fabric for a new semi-circle skirt for church
  • Finish green dresses
That sounds achieveable, right?

SBQ and today's to do list

Are you on "The Wagon?" If so, how long have you been on and how
"serious" are you about it? If not, have you considered it?

Yes, I am. Troy put me there, and won't let me off until either I finish a BAP or he gets to buy a sword...yes, I'm marrying a geek. And yes I said sword. At least he has decent taste in them, some of the ones he likes are really pretty. They're just expensive - $500ish US!!

How serious? Well, I'm determined to get a few things FINISHED, and I really need to stop buying stash. So my exemptions are that I can use birthday money, and that I can buy gifts or things necessary for completion of already owned projects. So I can buy floss for current projects, and it also means I can kit up/buy fabric for charts I already own, but Troy's the failsafe - I have to ask him first! It saves me a lot of money...goodness knows I have enough charts kitted up and I haven't got anywhere near starting them. It is fun to kit though. At least I have Periwinkle Fae who will be done soon-ish given how fast she's stitching up, and a QS to stitch for my friend Meg (QS Cat Nap Fae - awesome, means I get to stitch that adorable chart twice since I want it too, and she picked the chart) and QS Red Witch already kitted up so it will keep me busy, and allow new starts periodically.

I need to make a To-Do list for today, a few things really need doing. This way I can post my progress! Hey, it works for stitching (and some of this is stitching related)
  • finish the beading on part 3 of mystery X (#$*&#*#*$ lol) - done!
  • enjoy finally starting part 4
  • stitch something on Tranquility Mystery
  • stitchbow-ify the last few threads for periwinkle fae QS
  • organise my projects into little bags of their own
  • raid the house for calico bags for ^
  • spend at least some time in my room consolidating the chaos (I cant walk in there at this point in time)
  • go through clothes with Troy and get rid of anything that doesnt fit/I wont wear
  • ditto shoes

Goals for April

Right. I'm very not good at this goals thing, I think. I'm going to try and be reasonable this time, though I do have the holidays - two weeks of stitching, yay!

Last Month:

Stitching:
  • catch up the Mystery, with part 3 done - almost. Pretty much just need the beading done, now, and I might attack that today.
  • stick to the new rotation - eh, heh! I think I'm rotation impaired.
  • stitch along with Tash when I get my JOB stuff - yes! Once, because that's the only chance I've got to do so.
  • not start anything new except JOB - nope, started the tranquility mystery, but no new starts now for a long time.
  • stitch in the HAED QS SAL with periwinkle at least twice this month - yes, second and fourth weeks
  • stitch in the 2nd weekend SAL with From the Ashes - yep, and achieved more than I expected.
  • experiment with cross country on From the Ashes - yep - great! I'll continue this way.
  • think about getting new fabric for frogs...anna and waychie (who have actually seen them), do you think they're worth starting over on jobelan with white silk? Or should I just stick with them as they are? - ordered, a pearly grey. It's in the mail.
  • not buy ANYTHING else! - fail. mystery. but at least it wasn't expensive...
Life:
  • keep my room relatively clean - lol. um.
  • actually pray my rosary at least once each week - nope, which annoys me.
  • get fabric together for quilt for school (find it all!) - still planning, so we'll see.
  • get fabric for quilt that's still needed (solid colour fabrics) - see above
  • keep up to date with school - yep, all up to date.
  • try to get to bed at a reasonable hour each night - yes and no. No 3am crashes at least.

This Month:

Stitching:

  • catch up part 3 (almost done) and part 4 (small) of mystery X

  • stitch on from the ashes during the SAL

Goals review and new goals

March's goals:

Stitching:

  • keep up with Mystery X (even with that enormous part - eek!) - didn't happen. still working on it now, though getting close - just a bit of the dark blue&green, and the pale green to stitch - and the beads
  • stitch beads for part 1 - this didn't happen either, though i'm starting to stitch the beads now along with the threads I'm working with (I rotate through the colours, a length at a time so I don't get in a rut)
  • stick to rotation - sacrificed this one to try and keep the other two. I'll try to do better this month.

Life:
  • get all homework done, on time - yes! For the first time in my life, it's week 5 and i'm completely up to date. Week 6 actually, and I haven't missed any assignments.
  • not miss meds AT ALL - yep. Not having a repeat of what happened to make me make this a goal last month!
  • start taking my lunch to school - no, not this time. Which is frustrating, but it will happen, eventually. Eventually being the operative...
  • get a bedtime, and stick to it - heh. well, bedtime I got. sticking to it is the hard part. Stitching gets in the way especially.
  • clean my room - nope, though Mel's said she'll do it for me when she comes up Tuesday.

This Month:

Stitching:
  • catch up the Mystery, with part 3 done
  • stick to the new rotation
  • stitch along with Tash when I get my JOB stuff
  • not start anything new except JOB
  • stitch in the HAED QS SAL with periwinkle at least twice this month
  • stitch in the 2nd weekend SAL with From the Ashes
  • experiment with cross country on From the Ashes
  • think about getting new fabric for frogs...anna and waychie (who have actually seen them), do you think they're worth starting over on jobelan with white silk? Or should I just stick with them as they are?
  • not buy ANYTHING else!

  • get fabric together for quilt for school (find it all!)
  • get fabric for quilt that's still needed (solid colour fabrics)
  • keep up to date with school
  • try to get to bed at a reasonable hour each night

Where Kyrie went, and stuff on this year

I'm on holiday in Tumby with my family and Troy, staying with my grandmother. And no internet. There's internet at the library, but hard to get a computer for long enough to do anything useful.

So here I am at the library, finally caught up on everyone's blogs! I'm a bit behind on other stuff, but I'm sure it will work itself out.

Goals for this year:

Well, my HAED board ones are:
  • 4 pages on From the Ashes
  • Finish half of Froggy Frog World (10 pages)
  • Finish Hope.

Other than that, I want to keep up with my chatelaine every month (not a problem this month, I've almost finished all the cross stitching already!) and stick to the rotation, and see how it all goes. Rotation details etc etc are in a post below.

So hello to everyone who's missed me, sorry!

Christmas and stuff

Well, it's over and done with for another year. Yay!

I'll type up a 'what i got' type post later, but this one is about stitching in the new year.

As it stands, here's what I'm looking at.

Beginning of every month:
Mystery X (Chatelaine)

Second weekend of every month (May interrupt Mystery X):
HAED BB SAL - Phoenix Rising, Teri Rosario

Rotation:
  • Hope Angel Virtue (HAED)
  • Noon Basking (Dracolair)
  • Periwinkle Fae (HAED)
  • Froggy Frog World (HAED)
School:
two major pracs and any other stuff I do for it.

looks like a fairly good year of stitching - oh and did I mention I want to do a double wedding ring quilt for Troy and my bed? Yeah that too. Spare time? What is this thing you speak of *grin*

I love being busy.

Advent Kalender & lack of stitching & Dec goals

Yeah a few things in this post.

The chatelaine christmas things are in full swing - the first advent kalender window was to die for (a rather lovely ornament chart) and bingo has started, no words for me though :( yet!

I haven't been stitching much the last couple days, thursday due to health and friday because i did everyone's christmas shopping with mel, which was lots of fun. I am officially in love with Troy's present, but I hope he'll like it even more than I do. I'm thinking of picking up my needle later today though, and getting some work done on the frogs. I've got some spare aida, too, so I think I might grab the necessary fibres (or the ones i don't have anyway - i need to catalogue what I have, including the leftovers from caitlin's things) for the advent kalender piece and stitch it up too, so cute.

My december stitching goals are as follows:
  • to finish this row on froggy frog world (easy one)
  • a page on the angel
  • finish off the page on periwinkle if/when i find her
  • get fabric & work on dragon
  • enjoy my new frame when I get it
  • enjoy chatelaine kit when i get it

I'm not sure where all my rich text options have gone, might have to figure that one out.
